I love a good rabbit hole

Hello and Welcome!

I was just on one of my favorite websites, Crystal Vaults.

It’s a good browse.

I love a good rabbit hole – a website with enough meat on its bones that you can browse and read and spend a little time and get good, solid, reliable, time-tested, usable information. If tiktoks, reels and shorts are a thin potato chip, then a good website is a full sized sandwich. Maybe a piping hot bowl of stew. If your lucky, it is the information equivalent of a full meal.

I like to think that TaoCraft Tarot is an all you can eat buffet of Tarot.

I’ve been at this for years. Decades. What started as small side freelancing to earn a little extra income for school expenses turned into 30 years of Tarot reading experience (almost 25 years of that as a professional) writing and blogging all along the way. Not all of it was on this platform, but a surprising chunk of it has been.

I love a good browse.

I hope you all will like browsing here, too. Welcome. The library is open. Feel free to use the search bar to dive into the Sage Sips / Taocraft Tarot archives. Enter a topic or tarot card and see what you can find.

Thanks for visiting!

Dichotomy: Choose Your Own Tarot Card

Choose your card Tarot reading: Pause the video. Focus on your question or guidance for the day(s) ahead. Restart the video to see the reveal and get your reading below.

This is an interactive Tarot reading – you choose your card. That way we work together for a more personalized experience for you in today’s video. If you want a Tarot reading by email that is truly private and personal, get yours HERE. Private readings, memberships and virtual coffee all support this blog.

Sometimes when there is a strong general, public energy the two cards in the interactive reading are closely related. Sometimes when the general energy is quieter, more personalized energies can step forward. In these quieter times, the two cards can seem almost opposite, like today.

When dichotomies and contradictions like this turn up in reading, especially in one of the larger card layouts, it can get pretty confusing. Over the years, I’ve learned that the best thing to do when this happens is to shift focus. Instead of looking for granular detail, look for the bigger picture. Look for the biggest gestalt picture that you can and then try to connect the seemingly opposite dots within the big picture. When you think of it as using a wide angle Camara lens instead of a zoom lens. When you look at the big picture, often your opposite-seeming cards are really just different parts of a larger whole.

Different, sometimes conflicted cards within the same Tarot reading are like the parable of the blind men describing an elephant. One touches the trunk and says elephants are a lot like snakes. Another touches the leg and says that elephants are just like tree trunks. Yet another blind man touches the elephant’s side as says elephants are just like a big wall. Individually they are each wrong, but in the big picture, they are all right.

Of course, that only really applies to multiple card readings. In a one card daily meditation like we are doing here, all you have to do is follow your instincts to the card that is right for you today. The other card might still apply, even though it seems very different from the other. Follow your intuition to the one that is asking for your attention the most today. The other card might apply to you too, but in the background or on another day.

But for now:

The Fool: Alan Watts famously wrote “You are under no obligation to be the same person you were five minutes ago.” New beginnings can happen at any moment. Take all of the happy memories and life lessons you want moving forward, but take care not to bring old emotional baggage into a new beginning.

Two of Swords: This is a liminal time, a portal between worlds and experiences in a way. It is like those seemingly impossible stacks of Zen rocks. There is a pause, a truce between forces, a delicate balance that is easily disrupted. All is connected. This fleeting moments of balance are delicate but powerful times that can tip the balance of things in any direction. Use your influence and the power of cause and effect wisely.

My Side of the Table: Parallax

“My Side of the Table” gives a behind the scenes look at the philosophy and process of Sage Words Tarot.

This blog is not monetized. Virtual coffees and private reading purchases support this blog and my other Tarot content across social media

I’ve been enjoying Threads lately.

It’s where I do a LOT of void screaming and rage re-posting. It’s fun. It’s another tool in the old stress-reduction toolkit. Blame it on the old Myers-Briggs personality thing. I’m INTP enough to thrive in an idea driven environment.

One of the many good and helpful things about Tarot is that is an environment of ideas, too. The suits of swords and pentacles resonate with that pragmatic, cognitive side of the human psyche. But, importantly, that is balanced by the Cups and Wands, the emotional, philosophical parts. Between the four suits and the major arcana, there are both comfort zones and challenge / balances for pretty much everybody. It helps those of us who are too much in our head to feel the feels when needs be, and it helps people in the middle of big emotions see a way through it all.

That being said, I stumbled across an interesting mini-conversation on Threads about “should professional readers get readings from other professional readers?” Not much was being said about it, so I thought I’d put my long format two cents worth here.

Actually, I put my long format two cents worth here 14 years ago when I originally wrote a blog post “Parallax”(re-printed below from the Modern Oracle Tarot archives)

Long story short, my answer is a qualified yes. It’s important for anyone to use their instincts and find a reader who resonates with them. Chemistry matters. In any Tarot or psychic reading it is important to find someone you instinctively trust, someone whose energy is comfortable, and ideally someone you feel good being around. And yes, all of those things come through email and video too.

Test that theory: surf the web or scroll social media and pay attention to your gut reflex response to a post or a website. What is it that makes you feel that way? Colors? Layout? Well edited vs raw? Pure instinct? The same applies to real world readings with real people. What about them puts you at ease or puts you on edge?

As important as these things are for everyone, it’s multiplied for a professional. We want to be at our psychological and emotional best in order to do good work for our clients – much as a good therapist would. Therapists are a good example of why professional psychics can benefit from readings from another professional. Seeing a process from the inside as well as the outside builds empathy, a good thing for both professions.

Should professional psychic readers get professional readings? Yes but only occasionally and with great focus and purpose from a known, vetted and trusted colleague.

Why occasionally? If a person needs a great deal of guidance, they may not be in a good emotional or cognitive space to be guiding others, at least for a time. Finding a reader who sets boundaries and takes care of themselves is a good sign that they can offer good advice to you.

One of the arguments against pro readers getting pro readings is the self-care aspect turned dark. Instead of an act of self-care so a pro can do their best for you, some people seemed to have the perception that it was a sign of poor quality. If a reader was any good, that they could read for themselves.

We do! All the freaking time.

But like I said in “Parallax” – sometimes two heads really are better than one.

Everything is connected. It takes two eyes to see with depth perception.

Try the “camera 1, camera 2” experiment from the movie “Wayne’s World”. We’ve all done this as kids, I think.

Here is how to experience parallax: Close one eye. Hold up a pencil (or your finger) at arms length. Using only one eye, line the pencil with a distant object – the corner of the room or a tree outside of the window for example.

Now switch eyes. The pencil isn’t lined up with the distant object anymore. A different point of view changes everything.

When you look with both eyes together, things shift again.

Should readers get readings? Yes – for all of the same reasons anyone would want a reading and with all of the same cautions and considerations anyone else would have.

And now here is Parallax from the 2019 update:

“Camera 1, Camera 2, Camera 1, Camera 2” ~ Wayne’s World 2

Ever play with that trick of eyesight? Close one eye, and hold up a pencil so it lines up with an object in the distance. Then switch eyes and the pencil seems to jump to one side. Things don’t line up the same way.

In astronomy, this is called parallax. In anatomy, this phenomenon where the brain combines two slightly different views from two slightly different viewpoint gives us depth perception…it allows us to see distance. Two eyes lets us live in three dimensions. It helps us to not walk into objects and learn our environment the literal hard way.

A similar idea is true in Tarot and psychic work. Getting a reading isn’t predicting the future…it is getting a second look, a separate viewpoint to combine with our own that lets us see with greater clarity and understanding. It helps us be a bit more perceptive, and not have to learn every lesson the hard way.

Two third-eyes are better than one, in other words.

Even those of us who do readings professionally will sometimes GET one to improve our understanding and fill in any blind spots.

I like to think that when psychics read for themselves or consult a fellow psychic, it works like binocular vision. Two readings from two people gives two views that can be fused together into a higher quality, more useful vision.

Another example is the VLA, “very large array” of radio telescopes. It is made of 27 or so radio antennae all linked together to work together like one big dish, one configuration is over 20 miles across. Working together, the telescopes have capabilities magnetudes more than any individual telescope. If we combine our logic, know-how, and life experience to work together with oracle tools (tarot, runes, palm lines, what-have-you) and other intuitives, we can increase our understanding and spiritual growth by magnitudes.

If one eye is closed, then depth perception doesn’t work. If one telescope is down, the array doesn’t work as well. We each bring our part to a reading. The sitter (learner, seeker, client) has a part to play too. When we do a Tarot reading, we work together. I translate spirit, but it is up to you to understand and apply the message. We work together like the telescopes in the VLA or two eyes together to see farther. Working together, we see with more clarity.

Together we are clairvoyant.

TBT: Ogres and Onions

Throwback Thursday to ogres, onions, and peeling back the layers of the TaoCraft Tarot reading layout (available by email, no appointment needed)

Shrek: ….ogres are like onions

Donkey: They stink?

….

Shrek: No! Layers. Onions have layers. Ogres have layers. You get it? We both have layers

from “Shrek” copyright 2001 Dreamworks Pictures, quote via imdb.com

Layers mean complexity. Layers apply to all sorts of things that are actually more complex than they seem at first glance; ogres, onions, cakes and – you guessed it – Tarot.

Reading Tarot for yourself is actually quite simple. In a couple of hours I could teach you to do good DIY readings for yourself. (Related: PeaceTarot ebook)

Reading for other people is another story. High level professional readings are, like onions and ogres, more complex than it seems on the surface. That’s the whole point of them. A professional reading can gives you extra layers of insight and experience that you can’t get alone. Two heads are better than one. Two eyes give depth perception (related post: parallax) The two of us working together gives your reading another layer of understanding.

Sometimes layers talk about authenticity. Sometimes you have to peel back a few layers to get to the real heart of the matter. We’ve talked about authenticity and public Tarot practice before, after my Modern Oracle Tarot work was re-branded to TaoCraft Tarot (related: what’s in a name, Shakespear’s Roses, Spell Your Name)

That’s all well and good, but consider another aspect of layers: growing new ones. Interestingly, actual onions grow on the inside. New layers are added at the core while older outside layers get dry and thin and ultimately fall away. In this, onions give us another useful metaphor.

In the medical field, and no doubt many other professions, continuing education is a condition of licensure and employment. You have to keep learning and keep current if you want to keep working. Whether it is required or not, whether it is career related or not, lifelong learning is a respected mark of excellence. Learning isn’t just formal education. Learning comes from experience and experimentation and the living of life. Artists’ work evolves over time. Any person’s point of view can evolve over time.

And so, the “Modern Oracle” layout is evolving. I’m calling abort on the video / text hybrid format. It was an experiment that failed, and I’ve learned something important from it.

Remember how deeper layers are often perceived as more authentic and how old layers of growing onions turn papery and fall off? It’s time for the 5 and 7 card Modern Oracle layouts to evolve, to become more authentic, to show more of their inner complexity. The video hybrid isn’t the way for that to happen. The names of layout card positions are changing. It’s a tiny detail that you may not even notice from your side of the Tarot table. On my side of the table it is important shift in mindset. This allows me to fully and authentically follow what intuition and spirit shows me.

I wrote the initial layout meanings to create a bridge from old fashioned, predict-the-future, fortune telling layouts to a more modern advice, guidance and empowerment reading. I wrote the Modern Oracle layouts specifically to show the power of your choices over your future. Cards that once were called “past, present and future” in the old style became “lessons from the past, current situation, and moving forward.” Predicting the future evolved into making an action plan.

Now it will go one step further. I in my minds’s eye, I see a reading in terms of dynamic energy flows, not a concrete road through time. As Modern Oracle layouts become TaoCraft layouts, we will let go of time and predictions entirely. If the Modern Oracle layout was like GPS map for your path ahead, the TaoCraft layout is like a GPS traffic update with a weather report.

Card 1, lessons from the past, will become Fading Energies, symbolizing energies that are moving away from you. These are things that need less of your attention.

Card 2, current situation, will become Current Energies, the energies that are strongest, and deal with things that need your attention in this moment.

Card 3, moving forward will become Growing Energies, energies moving toward you, or gaining influence in the path you’ve currently chosen. It still isn’t predictive. It is still intended to guide you, help you prepare for possible conditions ahead. Think of it like a weather report. It doesn’t tell you exactly what will happen to you during your day, but it can give you the chance of rain or sun while it happens.

Card 4 will remain Choices. It is still placed under the current energies card and at the center of the layout because that is still the place of power. Empowering your choices is still the heart of the reading. The choices card will take on a more advisory tone than before. Instead of suggesting how to persist or how change your path, it focuses on whether changing or whether staying the course is the wisest thing to do.

Card 5 is still Alternative Path just like before, showing the most open alternative path you if you decide a change is needed. (Or it can help keep you on your path if you like the way things are headed.)

Card 6 Helping Energies and card 7 Potential Challenges are the same as always, and speak to exactly what the name implies.

Long story short, if you are dead set on a specific “accurate” prediction, you aren’t going to like the new TaoCraft layouts. If that’s the case, you need the Zombie Cat yes/no readings like we did the other day. Even then, you have to realize it isn’t 100%.

If you are ready for next level, dynamic energy readings, I can help. Welcome to TaoCraft Tarot.
