Vestigial but Valuable

I follow a fair few Tarot readers on social media. @MadamAdam is a favorite. He posted the other day about those who accuse online psychics of being unethical or a scams after he had spent five or so years building a brand and business with ethics and authenticity.

Preach.

Of course my first response was to go grumpy granny bat and think about the 30 years I’ve spent working with spirituality, intuition development and card readings including the past 20 + years of brand and business building. Being thought of as a scam after pouring every ounce of professionalism you got into a being of service while getting a little fair compensation, all above board and tax paid….it’s enough to put a twist in any professional reader’s knickers.

I may have lost a great deal in the fame and fortune department by doing things with ethics and authenticity, but I can go on with life knowing that I did it right. A life of authenticity is a treasure all its own. I worked every moment above board, with ethics and transparency. Now that TaoCraft Tarot and Sage Sips is a blog supported by my labors of love and readers like you instead of being a full-on Tarot reading business, it seems a little silly to have such a detailed policy page.

It may be vestigial, but it is still valuable.

Ethics and authenticity aren’t selling points. They are character traits. They are how you do business, perhaps, but also how you live your life – if your authenticity is, um, authentic.

So here is my policy page, almost exactly as it has always been. Authenticity and ethical behavior doesn’t stop just because you stop answering the phone for in-person gigs and shift your focus to email readings.

At least this way you know that the readings you get with me are STILL highest quality, ethical, and above all authentic.

P.S. – the readings are fun and helpful too. Order yours HERE.

Real Talk Rewind -part 1

Keeping it 100 with the Ace of Swords

Keeping it real never stops in this business, but sometimes it helps to turn up the volume.

Hello and welcome to TaoCraft Tarot blog and podcast. I’m glad you are here.

Today’s card is the ace of swords.

Each of the minor arcana suits have a variety of associations. They are connected to a classic, alchemical element. Swords are air. Each suit has a handful of keyword connections that apply to the whole suit over and above the individual card meanings. For swords you have things like action, intellect, logic, and the realm of mind.

I deliberately chose the Ace of Swords for today. It wasn’t a random thing. It was the best card I could think of that would represent what I want to talk about. The topic is reverse engineering the card instead of the card inspiring the topic for a change. Reverse engineering your daily card is kind of fun to do every now and then, and a good way to help learn the deck if you are just starting out. Think of something abstract – a feeling, an idea, any intangible concept – and then browse the Tarot cards or an oracle deck or any visual image anywhere that resonates with that intangible idea.

The Ace of Swords is associated with keywords like “truth” and “communication.” That makes it a good card for what I’m aiming to do today. It’s an exercise in disclosure and transparency.

In the excerpt from my upcoming e-booklet TaoCraft: Portfolio on the blog page “How To Find a Psychic You Can Trust” open, consistent, mundane, ordinary business policies are one of the hallmarks of trustworthiness. If a psychic is open and honest and patient with you when you talk about run of the mill business things like hours and payment and scheduling and refunds and all of that stuff, then chances are they will treat your Tarot reading or psychic reading with the same respect. And this long post today is me walking that talk. Once a year or so, I try to re-introduce my policies and philosophies – restate my mission statement if you will.

None of this is new. If you are familiar I won’t be offended if you bail out now. I would too if I were you. All of this is always available on the “ABOUT” and “POLICY” pages on the blog website. I probably have too much information on the website but it is all there out in the open for you to read any time you want. The contact email for customer service is right on the home page, and you can ask any question you have there or in the blog comments. You are always more than welcome to browse the whole website including all of the old blog posts. The last time I tried it, the search box in the right hand column worked perfectly. If you want to know about a particular Tarot card, or anything about Tarot really, just type it in the search box and you’ll get a whole list full of old posts to read. If you can’t find what you want, just ask. If it’s not in the blog already, I’ll put it there. Consider this the world’s longest lasting and slowest ask me anything session. Seriously. Ask me anything. If it’s spam or offensive it will be annihilated in the blazing hellfire of my delete button. If I don’t have the answer I’ll either point to a better resource that might have an answer. Or I’ll recruit Zombie Cat to answer. The cat gets pretty snarky but will come up with some kind of Tarot answer for almost anything. The cat and I tend to answer in the form of blog posts but don’t worry, I always always always protect everyone’s identity.

Which is a good policy place to start: privacy. I don’t talk about clients and I don’t share your contact information with anyone. I don’t even keep records older than 30 days. Readings tend to be less useful as time goes on and things change. Updating your contact information each time and asking you for a question, topic, or permission for an open reading each time is how I form a connection to your energy and your specific message. Once I make the shift out of clairvoyant mode into normal mode, I don’t remember details about the reading very well. This kind of Tarot is like the pre-technology psychic equivalent of telegram or something like that.

That’s what ephemeral means when I say that I do Tarot exclusively as an ephemeral folk art service. It was never intended to last a long time. Yes, it is so called entertainment only, but it really is spiritual guidance and emotionally engaging and uplifting and inspirational and empowering and stress relieving and so much more. I’ve called art with heart for the past 30 years and in my experience that has proven true. There is a certain emotion and spark created in each unique individual reading, that can’t really be re-created. With each passing moment, one reading fades and a new connection with energy, spirit and universe sparks into being. Because of that constantly changing, ephemeral nature of this kind of work, exchanges are impossible. You know all of this going into a Tarot reading, so no refunds are available. That being said, I promise to work with you to make a reading as enjoyable and helpful as possible. Every email reading includes a follow up email at no extra charge for any questions or clarifications. To paraphrase the ebook “I want to show you the art of Tarot and this blog is my portfolio.”

There is more. Policy is pretty boring, so let’s stop there for now. I’ll bore you to tears with more of this on another day.

Thanks for listening so far! Next time it will be a little juicer when we talk about predicting the future.

The socials are going to be quiet this week but stay tuned here to the blog and podcast. It’s turning out to be a good week for bigger reads and behind the scenes.

If you are enjoying this peek into what life is like on the Clairvoyant’s side of the Tarot Table or if you enjoy the usual short sip posts, please be sure to follow the blog, follow the podcast, follow the socials (links are on the blog homepage) like, share, and support the blog and podcast on ko-fi.

See you at the next … post.

YouChoose Interactive Tarot for August 2-8, 2020: Happily Learning From the Absurd

Pick a card, left, center or right. Pause the video if you need a minute then restart for the reveal. Or just go with your first impulse. It works find either way. Then scroll down for the full reading. After that, I’ll be making a ranty announcemet un-announcing what I previously announced. Feel free to click away if you aren’t in the mood for it. I won’t swear. Much. I promise.

Left: Page of Pentacles. Learning is the elixer of youth. A little exercise doesn’t hurt, either. Pentacles are associated with earth element and the physical realm, often with career or wealth. If you are involved with any sort of training for work, this is a good week to focus on that. Energy put into aquiring new skill will be productive at some point. The Page of Penticles often hint at new opportunities. If you are well along in your career and an expert in your field, then write or teach. That is a learning experience too. If you have to understand something very well in order to explain it clearly and simply. No matter which end of the Socratic log you are sitting on, this week’s energy is flowing toward communication and new ideas.

Center: Page of Cups. I love this card. Life can be ridiculous. Some days you just kind of find yourself standing in the surf staring at a fish. Weird things happen. Life can be random. I feel a funky mojo week coming on. We can let it get to us – stew, brew and give it energy OR we can surf the waves and bring our new fishy friend. Other people’s harsh can be soothed by the waters of our sense of humor. Sure, 2020 has been a hot toxic dumpster fire in the U.S. for a lot of people. It’s hard to keep a sense of humor about real problems, but it helps.

Right: Nine of Pentacles. This card is associated with “truth” Of course everything is relative and there always seems to be that famous addendum that something is true “from a certain point of view.” This week, you may be asked to see the difference between subjective ‘truth’ and objective facts. Be clear on the objective and measurable. This is a week to remember that everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but not their own facts. Objective, observable, prove-able facts can be your tether and gaslight gas mask. Stay rooted and grounded, and be the voice of reason as best as you can in a week that might seem a little off kilter all around you.

You know that new subscription tier for the blog with the extra content and the one card tarot reading for each subscriber? Not happening.

Stripe, the payment processing service used for the premium blog arbitrarily excludes legitamate businesses on the basis of their content alone. To my mind this constitues outright discrimination against non-mainstream spiritual expression, like Tarot. I caution against working with this company in any capacity.

That being said, there will be no change in the blog or youtube channel. Both will remain free and unmonetized. Your reading purchases will still be processed through secure, reputable PayPal buttons.

I have over 25 years of experience. I’m really good at this – distance readings have been my specialty for years, so you are getting the benefit of that experience with each session. I’ve said time and again that Tarot does not and can not predict the future. That, as I see it, puts Tarot clearly in the realm of customized folk and first amendment protected speech and spiritual practice. My business practices are tranparent and expllicity published here.

As are prices. They are explicit, flat rate fee for service except large parties will charged hourly whenever they return. You know your full cost up front before you ever place the order for your distance reading or live phone session. No per minute rates that keep you talking and no hidden fees, ever.

Long story short, your blog follows, shares, likes, and reading orders are more appreciated than ever, particularly while in-person and party readings are closed during the pandemic.

Thank you so much for reading.

Q&A: How do you know if a psychic is ethical?

This is one of the very first posts I wrote for Modern Oracle / Tarotbytes blog way back on March 31, 2009. I’ve made a few edits today for spelling and grammar. Oops!

Q: There are a lot of crooks out there. How can you tell if a psychic is for real or not?

A; This question more complicated than you might think. “Real” could mean a lot of things, but in this case they were talking about ethics. They wanted to know how to tell if a psychic really wants to help people or just make a bunch of money.

Good question. One everybody should ask before they pick up a phone or get online or drive to a “psychic”

We are all in this business for one reason or another. It is fair, legal and right to pay for an artistic service like a psychic/Tarot reading. It is no different than buying a ticket to a concert, or buying a book, admission to a museum, paying a therapist or donating to a minister for performing a wedding ceremony. In all of these cases you are paying for all the same things that a Tarot session or a psychic reading gives: entertainment, inspiration, personal enrichment, personal growth, insight…you get the idea. You are compensating the reader for the time they spend with you plus their years of experience and learning. Fair price for a fair service is, ahem, fair for everyone – the same as any other artist or counselor.

The key word here is fair. Honesty is hard to gauge outright. The hard truth is that there are a lot of people who use spirituality to trick gullible people out of large sums of money. It isn’t just psychics. Some churches arguably do the same thing. (2019 me: hell, we put a corrupt con man in the white house…it definitely isn’t just psychics!)

These are some of the positive traits I believe a good psychic should have:

HONESTY: An ethical psychic will tell you what intuitive work can and can not do. No one person has all the answers for everything. I never take medical or pregnancy questions. You should handle those with a doctor. No one is “100% accurate”.  Phrases like “100% accurate” or “guaranteed results” always make me run, not walk, in the opposite direction. If it sounds to good to be true…it probably isn’t true. To guarantee results is to rob you of your freedom and free will. Even if it were possible, it would be wrong to do. An ethical psychic will give you a realistic idea of what to expect from a reading, and respect your choices about the information they give.

CLARITY: Does the psychic make the information understandable to you? Is the reading helpful? Can you USE it to make better decisions or make better sense out of your concerns? Psychic readings aren’t any good to anybody if they make no sense. This is why the next point is so important. If something isn’t clear to you or you don’t understand it, ask them to clarify.

WILLINGNESS TO ANSWER QUESTIONS: Sometimes it is hard to put the nonverbal images and impressions we receive into words. That is where the real skill of a psychic lies. We all have intuition and ‘psychic’ ability. The real “gift” is in being able to communicate the information in an understandable, helpful way. If you are in a reading, and you don’t understand what is being said, ask. If you are working with an e-mail reading…send a follow up question (but not a dozen – be fair to the reader) Someone who really wants to help will be willing rephrase and make an effort to make the reading understandable to you. Don’t take what a psychic says at face value just because it sounds fancy, esoteric or educated. Ask them to use plain language. If they won’t or become angry or offended, you may want to re-think if this is the best psychic for you.

OPENNESS ABOUT PRICES AND BUSINESS POLICIES: The reality is, whether the psychic approaches the readings as counseling, spiritual guidance, entertainment or what have you – it is still a business. Especially if that is their sole livelihood. Prices, policies about returns, scheduling, cancellations all should be as clear and up-front as with any other professional practice. By the same token, it is important for you to know and respect their guidelines and disclaimers as well.

PROFESSIONALISM AND COURTESY: In my opinion, Psychic and Tarot work is all about helping people. I give Tarot the same level of professionalism and ethics that I gave patients when I worked in mainstream medicine, and that I give my Natural Health clients now. More often than not, if someone seeks out a psychic reading it is because they have some very real problem. Often they are emotionally upset and more vulnerable than they usually are. Some psychics exploit that vulnerability, but the majority seek to help and heal it. An ethical psychic will not take advantage of a situation like that. A reading should never make you feel more vulnerable. If you feel intimidated, taken advantage of or belittled in any way, that should be a warning sign to you.

RESPECT FOR YOUR DECISIONS AND BELIEFS:  You should be the one to decide when, if ever, you go back for a reading. Getting too many readings in too short of a time can get confusing and ultimately do more harm than good. Intuitive readings shouldn’t ask that you believe certain things or not. Skepticism will not scare away or block “spirits” and lack of ‘believing” won’t keep you from getting a good reading. You should feel as if you are being treated with dignity and respect…not blamed if a reading doesn’t go well.

UNETHICAL OR MIS-MATCHED?:

If you don’t feel comfortable with a psychic it doesn’t automatically mean they are doing anything unethical or illegal. Just like doctors and ministers, we all have our own specialties, our own styles, and our own belief systems.

For example, some people love to go to dramatic, flamboyant psychics – it makes the reading more interesting and fun. Some people need the extra drama to ‘believe’ and let themselves be helped by the reading experience. Other people like a more practical style. My goal is to be the “no drama”, calm, reassuring type of psychic.

Different kinds of problems need different kinds of psychics. Some psychics work very well with medical concerns ( like the Carolyn Myss and Edgar Cayce, for example). The same is true with bereavement, or issues of life after death. Some are mediums and connect with crossed loved ones very easily, while it happens less often for others psychics.

DOES THE PSYCHIC HAVE STRUCTURED GUIDELINES?

This is a tricky one. Just because a psychic doesn’t share YOUR particular beliefs doesn’t mean they are unethical or criminal. (looking at you evangelicals) The key is if they have some sense of ethics. Usually the easiest way to see that is their business practices and disclaimers. If they have it together enough to write those, they have it together enough to treat you fairly.

(2019 me: In my practice, the guidelines go both ways. It keeps us all safe. When we both know what to expect, then giving you a good reading takes top priority. I expect my clients to treat me with the same respect I give them and reserve the right to terminate any session or appointment for inappropriate comments or behavior. If either of us need to cancel or reschedule, it isn’t a big deal, but we should give the other person notice…that sort of thing)

As for negative traits….

Here are some things about psychic readings that make me uncomfortable. I wouldn’t feel comfortable with a psychic that shows these things. Most of the ones I’ve met fortunately don’t.  It is your choice of course, but I suggest being on the lookout for:

  • claims of 100% accuracy
  • promises of a specific outcome: like “fixing your love life” or what have you
  • anger or agitation at questions
  • doesn’t let you take notes or make recordings of the reading for later reference
  • unclear pricing … free times, holding you online in a per-minute reading etc
  • demanding regular or “faithful” return visits or frequent readings
  • demanding that you believe certain things or the reading won’t “work”

IN THE END, YOU SHOULD ALWAYS FEEL BETTER AFTER A READING THAN YOU DID BEFORE THE READING STARTED. YOU SHOULD NEVER FEEL FRIGHTENED OR INTIMIDATED BY A READING.

Most of all, the best way to know if a particular psychic is a good match for you or not is to use your own intuition and street-smarts. If you feel like something is wrong, it is.
