Pick a deck, any deck

Sage Sips blog is Tarot for your day in the time it takes to sip your coffee.

Pick a Deck, Any Deck

If you are going to read Tarot cards, first you need – um – Tarot cards.

There is lore, tradition if you will, that to be a successful Tarot reader you must receive your first deck as a gift.

Bullpuckey.

Literally, this holds no water at all. I can see a metaphor in it. That the “deck” must be “given” could be the good advice to find a teacher. Teacher might mean anything from a book, an actual person, or even a humble blog like this one. The point is to have some guide, some inspiration, some point of reference and learning. Psychics should be life-long learners just like any good professional. The wise people and cunning folk who are drawn to Tarot tend to be curious with a love of learning anyway, professional or not.

I’ve had many wonderful teachers over the years – both in actual classes and defacto examples, beloved authors and more.

First was Sallie who gave my first ever reading and whose oft repeated phrase (and later title of her book) “the highest and best” is still the prime intent of every reading I do. Thanks to Paul and his brother Roger who taught psychometry and aura reading, visiting a museum will never be the same. Joy Star taught intuition development classes – and sparked many epiphanies. I can’t recommend the writings of Ted Andrews, Christopher Penczak, Mat Auryn, and of course “Magical Tarot, Mystical Tao” by Diane Morgan highly enough.

All of that is great, but what about the actual, literal deck of cards?

Pick a deck, any deck.

It’s an occupational hazard for Tarot readers. We all have a bunch of decks. (If you don – you will, child, you will)

Like everything else in the business, the best advice is to follow your instincts. When you know, you know. When looking at a deck seems to pop ideas and interpretations right into your head, then that deck is very readable for you as an individual. If you want it and can afford it – go for it.

Most of my deck purchases have been driven by the aesthetics (and granted permissions) of photographing the cards for the blog. Special thanks and shout-out to Seven Dane Asmund of publishinggoblin.com and Thom Pham of heartofstarstarot.com for allowing me to use their brilliant creations.

Once you have more than one deck, how do you know which deck to use in any given reading? Once again – pure instinct comes to the rescue.

We Tarot types also tend to anthropomorphize our decks. They do seem to have personalities. I suppose it’s no different than the kind of relationship Han Solo had with the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars or that a sea captain has with his ship. For example, I have one deck that I mostly picked up to support a small business and as a souvenir of a vacation. Although I know some readers that love it, that particular deck is about as readable as a brick for me EXCEPT for yes/no layouts. My black cats deck loves yes/no readings. That’s partly what sparked the idea for bringing “zombie cat” out of a one time post and making a full on alter ego reading out of it.

Zombie can and the black cats deck have an attitude, and will answer any questions even if they turn out to be dead wrong about it.

With distance readings, I’ll pick up whichever deck just seems right. More often than not, it will prove itself to be a good choice because the artwork on the deck is more apt for the message compared to other decks.

When I go to in-person readings, I often carry two decks and let the client choose while they are still in the bag. For parties, which I very seldom do any more, I’ll choose whichever deck I’m feeling for the night in order to meet the demands of party style readings.

(P.S. party and in-person readings are still closed for summer. When they return in the fall, it will be on a very limited basis – please follow the blog for details)

Do you have a favorite Tarot card or one you feel really represents you right now? Most of us do, and it seems common for it to change as time goes by. If you are in the market for a Tarot deck, comparing your personal “significator” card among decks is one way to find a deck that is a good energy match for you. Look for a deck that has artwork that increases the resonance with that one special card even more.

Or look at a few favorite cards. If special key cards resonate with you, there is a good chance the whole deck will be serviceable as far as readings go.

Aesthetics for photos is another story. Make sure you are clear about copyrights and permissions for that, no intuition about it.

Once you pick your new deck and indulge in purchasing (or, lucky you, get one as a gift) make friends with the deck. There are lots of ways to do that.

Just handling it, shuffling it, browsing it is a good start. Or, as we’ve done here with the Alleyman’s Tarot and the Lenormand Tarot, just USE it. Daily one card meditation readings are a great way to learn BOTH your deck and how to read Tarot in general.

Want to learn to do daily meditation readings? It’s HERE in my ebook Peace tarot.

You can also get to know a new deck through interviews. You can set the intention of learning the deck, then ask questions about the deck itself. Daily-Tarot-Girl.com has some wonderful interview your new deck ideas. Check out Kate’s fantastic suggestions!

I’ve tried this one – it works. You know that Black Cats deck I was telling you about earlier that seems to like doing the yes/no readings? The interview technique confirmed that hunch, so that’s the deck I use for Zombie Cat readings these days.

So yes, in a sense, you must be “given” your first Tarot deck in a symbolic way insofar as finding a guide: books, a class, a mentor of some sort.

And no, you don’t have to be literally given your literal first deck as a gift – although it is a really cool gift to receive regardless of your Tarot reading experience level.

In short, pick a deck, any deck – and then get to reading.

Speaking of reading – thank you as always for reading Sage Sips’ blog and social media posts.

See you at the next sip!

Today’s Tarot: Emphasis, Not Error

Earlier this week (in other words, yesterday) the four of pentacles was one of the cards in the YouChoose Interactive reading. The boilerplate interpretation of repeating cards is that we aren’t learning the lesson that the card is bringing. It’s too soon for that to make any sense, especially in a general audience reading like this. One to one, private, individual readings are very different. In an individual session, I dial in to your specific message within the energy at large and translate that into ideas directed toward you as an idividual. These blog readings are like looking at the energy of a flock of birds or a school of fish all moving roughly together but with scattered individual for whom none of this will make any sense at all.

In this situation, we can’t consider a repeating card, especially one that comes two days in a row, to be an unlearned lesson. Humans just don’t learn or integrate the kind of life-lessons associated with Tarot in that amount of time.

In my minds eye I see the red light emoji, and hear almost a video game sort of alert signal, a little like the ‘time is almost up’ sound they make on American Ninja Warrior. I can also mentally ‘see’ a yellow highlighter marker.

For those of you who chose the Four of Pentacles yesterday, this is a double dose. Having the card appear both yesterday and today makes the message all the more important for you. The way the card moved from an option to a full on general audience hints that the message is growing in importnance and urgency, not fading. The message is for everyone now, but with an extra dose for the folks who chose the card yesterday.

The Four of Pentacles can be associated with greed and stinginess. That isn’t the thread of meaning that is so urgent right now. It speaks more to care, carefulness with budget and money. This is not a good time for impulse buys and self indulgence. Practical, low key, stock the pantry kind of energy is around. Think squirrels gathering walnuts for the winter.

Winter, as they say, is coming.

Pragmatic planning is your friend today. Slow and steady very much wins the race. This isn’t a full energy all out emergency. It isn’t a time of euphoria or dysphoria either one. Plodding, methodical, planning, budgeting are all words that come to mind today.

It’s that time of year. Taking the Four of Coins/Pentacles advice, I’m trying to get organized for Fall. Forgive the repetition, but it helps me to triage and prepare if I organize a few basic announcements for you.

First, there won’t be a premium blog after all. All of the blog, all of the YouTube channel is free and open. I haven’t monetized either one. Both the blog and the channel take some time and effort to do, especially since I’m a great Tarot reader but not such a great video media personality. The steep learning curve continues. If you like what you read in the blog, and use it oftern, please consider getting a peronal reading. One card readings are the cost of a coffeehouse latte. Although I wouldn’t object to being paid in my favorite drink, you can’t send coconut vanilla flat whites  through email. If you are so inclined, distance readings are available for order 24/7 no appointment needed on the home page.

Second, I hope you’ll consider following the blog by email along with your favorite social media (say hi on Instagram and Twitter, I actually interact with those) If you follow the blog, you’ll get all of the content. There will be print only posts that do not appear on the YouTube channel.

Third, due to the ongoing pandemic and the oncoming flu season, in-person readings and party Tarot readings are still closed. If you want a live, real-time reading, phone readings are available by appointment with prepayment. Order a phone session just like you would order anything online using the secure paypal button HERE then contact me at TaoCraftTarot@gmail.com to schedule your session.

Fourth, ask me anything! The comments are back open and you are welcome to tell me the kind of content you want to see, or ask any questions you like. I won’t promise an individual reply, but I will answer everything that I can in the blog itself. Any spam or anything inappropriate will be thrown into an active volcano and never heard from again.

Thank you all. Best Wishes – R.

Ask Zombie Cat: Calm will come…eventually.

“Zombie Cat” yes/no layouts like this one are only available seasonally and only available in the email format. Look for Zombie Cat’s Summer Shamble starting June 1, 2024 ($10 for members, $15 for non-members)

Q: I’ve been going through a lot lately. Things are changing fast and I’ve been learning so many things the hard way. Are things ever going to calm down?

A: Maybe but leaning yes.

My hunch is that it is actually more yes than maybe, but with the downside that it won’t kick in for a few more months yet. In my minds eye I see the dogs howling at the moon that you see on some many Moon cards. For some reason that says “dog days of summer” to me. Maybe this is pure projection on my part, because this time of year with the sun, heat and humidity makes my fur more gnarly than usual. It feels like the current energy pattern is going to hang around at least as long as the hot weather. “Things will turn with the weather, bluer skies and sweaters.” Knowing where you are, I’m remembering painting outside on a 80 degree November not so long ago. I’m thinking don’t hold your breath for any real relief until a serious, growing season ending, killing frost. Sort of a big harvest moon, October–December vibe. That would go along with the 4 of Wands, which is about foundations, and community celebrations.

The 4 of Wands also speaks to the new place to live. Yes, it will become foundational, in time. I ‘hear’ “make a house a home” plus something about grounding or earth…this is gonna sound more nuts than usual. I don’t know what the issues are around the new address, but it feels like the energy there needs both cleared and grounded, swept of a lingering funk that pre-dates you and rooted and grounded … settled if you will… on an energy level to make a way for more literal grounding and calming to manifest. This is weird, purely intuitive, and has no basis in science or tradition that I know of on a conscious level. I get the image of sprinkling a 50/50 mixture of salt and diatomacious earth….literally just by pinches at a time…along the baseboards, along the perimeter walls of the house. Don’t worry about inner walls, or specific rooms, just the walls that join the outside. No need to make a big mess, just a ceremonial line using little pinches and clear intention. Sage and smuding are too airy and ethereal. This calls for a tangible bam of something.

The Ace of Swords is associated with air. This feels a little more cautioning than reassuring / advising like the 4 of wands was. Swords and air have to do with intellect. Don’t overthink during this upcoming season, now through the end of the year in any case. This also would go along with the literal grounding / clearing house thing, as being needed to balance the airy creative energy.

The Ace of Swords also reminds me of something you said when we were talking about which deck you’d like to use for this. You were talking about being more “ethereal….like a good spiritual student” with the other deck, but went with this one because it was “bubbling up inside.” I warrant that listening to the stuff that bubbles up inside IS what it means to be a good spiritual student. It is easy to equate spirituality with ethereal, good with serene and so on. This card, this part of the yes/no reminds me of what we were saying yesterday, if it seems like life is beating on you…it is. And that is ok. It first of all is probably because Life knows you are badass enough to deal with it, and second of all, chaos and pains in the ass are just as spiritual as rainbows and unicorns. Remember that article you sent, and that Alan Watts quote? “You are a function of what the whole universe is doing just like a wave is a function of what the whole ocean is doing.”

In other words, don’t sweat it, you GOT this. The ocean of life, love and spirituality touch the great white shark the same as the angelfish. Rest will come in its time. Meanwhile, enjoy the swim. You wouldn’t be in the deep end if you couldn’t handle it. This is a chance to discover your inner orca, have a glass of wine, watch Shark Week on TV….that kind of thing. Recharge? Sure. You eat stress for breakfast. You got this.

The Ace of Wands continues in that vein with a more inward turn. Knowing that spirituality takes all forms, so does self-care. Like the human has said before about this card….carry a torch for yourself. Accept your passions and desires, strengths and weakness for what they are…both your increadable resiliancy and your sincere desire for a day off. Need a break? Take it! With gusto and passion! Tell it all to leave a message, and take a spa day. Which I guess takes us back to wine and shark week, but you get the idea. Let your passions shine, even if it is a passion for kicking things to the curb and carving out the peace and quiet you want. Want peace and quiet with burning passion! Or something like that.

So YES things will settle, but that process can be helped along. You have been answered “the hard way” because you can handle it. Rest hasn’t come yet because you still have a bit more to do. It may not feel like it, but you can keep on keeping on. Plus maybe this is a time to explore the gritty, gnarly, not–so-ethereal side of spirituality. Don’t ask me why, but Sam Elliot style movie characters come to mind…the grizzled antihero, Deadpool kind of thing. Not saying that you are that way, just that might be a good mental cosplay, a way to find a way to have a little fun with the chaos until the rest really does come, which it will, but later. Kind of like when the human let’s me come out and play and unleash a little Zombie snark on the world. It’s all just in good fun to get you through until that change in the literal and energetic weather.

Braaaiiiiinns!
