Sage Sips is Tarot in the time it takes to sip your coffee
I’m sitting here with a cup of coffee and a slice of leftover pizza (the breakfast of champions) wishing I had some earth shaking Tarot insight, brilliant read or the year ahead, or at least some good advice to offer.
After the traditional playing of U2’s “New Years Day” I have to admit Bono is right in the lyrics “nothing changes on New Year’s Day”.
You know what is same-est thing about New Years Day? It is the way everything changes on New Years Day – and every other day too.
Shift your inner perception, and the whole universe can look just a tiny bit different.
That being said, I still don’t have any particular wisdom to offer about 2025. I don’t have anything to say about today, except to let it be what it is, whatever it is. If it is exactly like yesterday, that’s OK. If it is a profound new beginning, wonderful! If it sucks in uncountable ways, I’m sorry. I feel you. We just have to hold on to the notion that it will suck a little less eventually. It’s New Years Day, and like any other day, it is whatever it is: joyous, tragic, or kinda average.
One of the things I like about Taoist philosophy is the way it embraces seemingly opposite things as part of a bigger wholeness. Today may be a brand new beginning. Today might be the pit of despair. Today might be a massive hangover. Whatever it is, it is part of the biggest big picture. Whatever it is you are not alone. Whatever today may be, old days are still with us and tomorrow brings another new day. Yet still, today is all we have. Might as well be at peace with it.
Whatever this new year may actually turn out to be, my hope and my wish for all of us is for a time of health, happiness, safety and ease.
Happy New Year, everyone!
If a Tarot reading would help you find your way through New Years Day and all of the other days, I’m here. Distance readings are my specialty, so they are open and available to order all of the time.
Most orders are delivered to your email within 24 hours. I’m not a big business, a scam or a media maven, so I don’t have ‘a team’ It’s just me, my laptop, my cards and my intuition. Sometimes there might be delays depending on the day job, holidays with family, needing to sleep and whatnot.
Thanks so much for reading! Please support this Tarot work: Any virtual coffees or private reading orders support this blog, the free readings on social media and the non-monetized YouTube channel.
New year, same story for these posts. Every year, I say I’m not going to play this game of looking to the year ahead, predictions are impossible, blah, blah, blah.
Yet, here we are, pulling cards for the new year. Why? Two reasons, I think.
First, it’s fun.
It is fun to make predictions about the new year as if they could be as true as they are in fantasy books and movies. The chances of making an accurate prediction are small. Still, it’s fun to try. It’s playful imagination and there is nothing wrong with that.
Second it is useful.
It’s helpful in the real-world way that Tarot can help every day of every year: It helps get our minds and hearts around the events of the past, contemplate ideas to navigate the future, and maybe, just maybe, find some peace and solace in this present moment.
This year I’m using the “seasons” layout that can look at the year ahead at any occasion (or no occasion at all) not just the new calendar year. Birthdays, anniversaries, graduation, solstice, equinox – any time, really.
There picture explains the layout. There is one card for each of the next four seasons. It’s winter now, so we begin there and read from right to left. Reading it opposite of English disrupts that logic & flow, and makes it just that tiny bit easier to look and listen to intuition. Someone used the word “Theme” to describe a card. I like that. Each card gives a theme, a thought, a vibe for the season it represents, not a definite prediction. Although I will tell you about mental images (clairvoyance, what I intuitively “see”) or any intuitive sounds / music / words (clairaudience, what I intuitively “hear”) Not that it is a prediction, but because it might mean something to somebody, somewhere. That’s the whole point of doing these so-called collective energy or general audience readings on the blog or social media. It might be of use to somebody somewhere at some point in time whenever they stumble across this.
The only problem with that is that collective energy is very mixed and diffuse. Private readings are by nature different. Reading your energy message especially just for you is going to wind up with a very different feel than this. This is a ‘one size fits all’ reading. A private reading is custom tailored to fit you.
If all of this also happens to entice someone to try a private email reading with me, all the better. I’m happy for that, too.
Let’s do this exactly as I would if this were a private reading. I feel like following that structure might be comforting for both of us.
General Pattern
The general pattern section talks about the layout as a whole.
In this case, two of the central cards, Justice and The Magician, are from the major arcana. Major arcana cards are hint at higher energy, more changeable times. All those internet memes about 2025 being as chaotic as the past 4 years may not be off the mark. I hope it is wrong, but spring and summer may have some intense moments to say the least. Whether that intensity is good or bad is up to each of us to judge. Objective, outer circumstances are neutral. The physical universe isn’t good or bad…it just IS. We project our judgement about those objective qualities on the dispassionate physical realm.
It’s like the weather. Drought or flood, rain isn’t good or bad, it just is. Rain doesn’t give a crap how we feel about it, it is water falling from the sky either way. And so it is with change and high energy times. Big changes and big events bring big feelings, but the rain will still fall and the sun will still shine again.
Long story short, brace yourself for big energies and feels, especially mid year.
The minor arcana cards are cups (emotions, close relationships) and wands (passions, philosophy, spirituality, your relationship with yourself). My hunch is that we are heading for a year of big emotions and big passions where the heart rules the head more often than not.
Be kind – to yourself and to others when the feels come along. Nerves may be raw at times. A little patience and compassion might go a longer way than any of us might think at first.
No pentacles or wands showing at all. Not sure if that means that logic and practicality isn’t going to be an issue, or if it means those things are going to be absent from the year to our peril. That being said, don’t forget to be practical and logical and be the cooler head that prevails – at least every now and then.
Winter (now – March) Ten of Wands
Wands is fire and passion. Ten cards are the volume turned up to 11 on the essence of the suit. The only double-digit, and the pinnacle of the numbered cards before entering the court cards. The Ten of Wands is traditionally associated with heavy weights that have been taken on with or without justification. In the classic Pamela Smith artwork, the figure on the card looks like he is hitting his head on a wall of his own making that he is carrying. The array of sticks isn’t touching the ground. I “hear” pie in the sky. Not so much in the usual sense of that phrase, that something is an unrealistic dream, but in the sense of the barriers and burdens being an illusion as well. What heavy weights do you carry because you think you have to, and what is genuine responsibility. What is truly yours to carry, and what can be put aside?
From the other side of the sticks, what have you neglected to carry? What do you do if you are the thing set aside?
As I look at this card, the most important thing to consider are blockades we imagine. What are the blockages that we have set for ourselves? What fences and walls exist because we carry them around unattached to the ground?
Spring (March-June) Justice
In the past, the Justice card was tied to literal legal concerns and the court system. Now it is associated with abstract ideas of justice, fairness, wisdom, balance, integrity and accountability.
Of all of these key words, fairness steps forward as key. Looking at the card, the upright sword grabs my attention as important.
It isn’t a card from the suit of swords, which to my mind underlines the sword’s importance in this context. The sword’s connection to mind and intellect is crucial here, as well as the balance the scales symbolize.
This isn’t an impression directly from the card or its tradition, but I get the mental images of a driving rainstorm and get a sense of be the eye of the hurricane. During this season, keeping your cool is more important than at any other time. This season may well draw on every ounce of wisdom and clarity and balance and sense of fairness that you can muster.
Summer (June – September) The Magician
I get the feeling that the transition of seasons may not be smooth and the energy might not be clear-cut. It feels like a gradual slide from turbulent energy that draws on every ounce of cool-headed, intellectual, balanced fairness that you have into a calmer, much more spiritual energy. Lazy days of summer comes to mind. Later, hotter doldrums may seem like a relief after the spring storms so to speak. Of course, I’m talking about energy feels, not the literal weather.
I hear the word opportunity. The energy climate of late summer might offer an opportunity to deliberately work with the idea of manifestation for those so inclined. It’s not just magical thinking. In fact, this feels like the exact opposite of the think-positive, vision board, woo woo manifestation. This is grit and hard work and hand blisters kind of manifestation.
I hear you reap what you sow. From the real-world agriculture time of year, this isn’t the time for planting literal seeds. Energetically this is a time to build a stone foundation. You don’t plant corn seeds in the spring and get an apple tree in the fall. I hear know what you want and DO something toward getting it.
It can be a frightening prospect that re-awakens old issues with self-confidence or the responsibilities and burdens that were symbolized earlier by the ten of wands. Be kind to the fear. It isn’t irrational. It needs your love.
The Magician is also about transformation. The old may be gone, but that doesn’t mean it can be made into something new and different. I get the mental images of kintsuge from Japan where broken pottery is repaired with precious metal and thought to be more beautiful than before.
The Ten of Cups is one of those all-good cards associated with love, fulfillment, belonging and joy. This is the second “seasons” reading where I’ve gotten this card in the fall spot. I’m guessing there may be something trying to put our attention on October. Especially with another 10 in the layout this time. I can’t quite recognize it or pull it into focus, but I keep hearing a song with the lyrics “happy ending.” It reminds me of a 90s Alanis Moressette sort of song, something grunge era-ish. I hope its right. Heads up and eyes open for October.
2025 – Nine of Cups
Big number cups cards = big feels and emotions in store would be my guess. Nine of cups is a generally positive card with connotations of community and warmth. Mutual aid society comes to mind for some reason. There is the image of a small, familiar place with a large fireplace and plenty of beer. It has the stereotypical look and feel of a medieval inn or a seventeenth century pub or a fantasy adventure tavern on Tik Tok (Nod to the Lucky Gryphon, Quincey’s Tavern, one of my absolute favorite of the genre)
Storms may rage, feelings may run equally high, heartbreak or triumph, love and close community will save the day. Give it freely, accept it freely, allow yourself to be comforted when you need it. It is a big world. There are lots of us in it. Enough so that you are not alone, even if it feels that way.
Storms may rage, but cups will eventually be filled. With what is yet to be seen, but there is hope for a happy ending in time.
Summary
This part is practically impossible to do for a collective audience reading. In a private reading, this is where I would give any purely intuitive images or impressions that come through whether they are connected to the cards & question or not.
In this case, the impressions seem wildly random. If something resonates with you, it is yours. If it doesn’t resonate, then its for someone else. May there be lots of someone elses who read this and get some little morsel of something from the cards.
For what it is worth, I see rough aquamarine or maybe blue kayanite. Both connect to the throat chakra and have to do with communicating. There is more here than general communication. The feeling focuses on bridge-building. It is about effective communication and connection building more than simply being heard.
For aromatherapy, I get the scent of lemon, which is clearing and energizing, Lemon drops – lemon cookies – bright, tart, clean.
Mixed with that….
For some it is lemon, but for others it is woody, powdery and soothing, like sandalwood or sandalwood with vanilla.
I see a snowstorm. No idea of time or symbolism. Just a feeling of being very glad to see it through a window instead of being out in it.
Now the snow and clouds fade grey like sunset or twilight when it is very cloudy.
Here I get a sense of all of us being asked to be courageous and strong.
There the energy steps back.
Thank you all for reading! I hope everyone has a Happy New Year Holiday, and a happy, safe, prosperous 2025. See you at the next sip!
Happy New Year! Re-introducing the re-introductions
Happy 2024 everyone!
We’ve made it to the other side of blurry time and it was, well, blurry. Did you make any resolutions for the new year? Mine is resolution is to give up on resolutions.
One of the reasons I flirted with the “TaoCraft” name for a while is because year after year, time and time again Taoist philosophy proves itself right and useful. I’m gratefully at a point where I can let the nature of my Tarot work be what it is.
“The universe is under no obligation to make sense to you.” – Neil deGrasse Tyson.
Intuition, like the universe, is under no obligation to make sense OR to follow best marketing practices OR to follow any calendar or schedule. I’ve been doing this professionally since 2003 and it hasn’t fit into a set schedule yet.
It’s time to be in harmony with the nature of Tarot. I’m willing to be at peace with the fact that the schedule for 2024 is that there is no schedule at all.
Do you have anything that is free form and flows like water into the empty spaces of life? It’s really relaxing to have SOMETHING like that. Tarot, by its naturea, is one of those things.
Here, now, as we look at this screen together outside of time – thank you for reading this blog. I hope we can go on through 2024 flowing as a river of peace and relaxation in these moments together. That is what Tarot is really for – finding moments of peacefulness in life’s torrent of emotions and bustling activity.
I’ll be the first to admit that blurry time got the better of me this year, although the cookies were really very good. (More about stuff like that on Sage’s Other Words blog.) I had originally intended to use the holiday time to “reset” as they say in broadcasting. I wanted to pause for station identification and to re-introduce my work, the new name, the website, Tarot in general – all of it – to everyone. I introduced myself and the Sage Words / Sage Sips name in
Just because we ate all of the cookies doesn’t mean the guided tour has to stop. You can still expect those re-introduction posts to filter in over the next few, slightly less blurry weeks.
For clarity, let’s start with the easy stuff like the 2024 schedule.
There isn’t any.
For the whole year. Nada. Zip. Zero. None.
I have a general plan, but absolutely no promises about consistency. I do, however, promise to keep the blog up to date. If you ever want an affordable, convenient Tarot reading this is the first and best place to look. All the socials are @SageWordsTarot (add a YT on YouTube) and they are pretty caught up as well. I’ve been enjoying Threads a lot lately so that’s the best place to catch me for an actual conversation.
In any case, I’m aiming for a loose structure but letting it do whatever it is going to do in the end. I’m not forcing my Tarot to fit a schedule or forcing the rest of my schedule to fit Tarot.
It is what it is.
There are reasons why Lau Tzu, purported author of the Tao Te Ching, is the one looking smiley and chill in the classic motif of The Three Vinegar Tasters. The others are reacting to the bitterness and sourness that they taste. Our buddy Lau Tzu is just happy that the vinegar tastes just like vinegar should.
You may or may not like the taste of vinegar. You may or may not like an unpredictable blog or social post schedule, but both are true to their nature, just as they should be.
The not-really-a-plan plan:
Blog posts are mostly going to be Monday and Wednesday but other random times too.
Social media will post whenever there is something new on the blog, but other random times too. Fair warning: I’m a bit of a rage re-poster so look out for that.
Member exclusive content on the ko-fi blog is going to be totally random (the main membership benefit is FREE one card private readings by email upon your reqest)
Good or bad, I’ve been enjoying Threads lately. If you want to actually communicate, that’s the best social media place. Email is the fastest and most reliable contact otherwise.
NO APPOINTMENT NEEDED: Private Readings by email (with photo) video or pen & ink can be ordered anytime, 24/7 in the shop. Delivery times vary depending on when you place your order.
Live online and in-person Tarot readings by appointment only are very limited this year. Please contact me for details.
So much is up to you – it’s your choice what you do with what you are handed. Emotions bubble up, but you choose what you do about them.
Sorry about the shreddy sounding voice and disorganized presentation (there are reasons why I’m a writer type Tarot reader and not a social media influencer) but watch the video, pick a path.
This shows some of my choices for 2024.The YouTube channel is all companion videos showing the real world card draw for the day. The video has short commentary in the description, but the full reading is here in the blog. I don’t like talking on video, so there you are. I hope you’ll watch and read to get the best of both worlds.
Looking at all the rows together we see lots of major arcana and court cards. I think that is hinting at a big energy year. Lots of change, a real roller coaster ride. Plant good seeds, set a good foundation now so our roller coaster ride ends up in a good place.
Top Row – Quartz
Clear quartz is the universal amplifier. It turns up the volume on your connection to universal energies and the effects of other stones and crystals. This may be your year to be the helper. Speak your truth and let it be heard.
Fading Energy: 10 of Swords. I’m guessing that 2023 was a heckuva year for you. This card isn’t hinting that anything dire is going to happen. It’s hinting that it already has. HEAL. Let yourself be down, make a full assessment of everything that has happened so you can stand up again. I always connect this card to the proverb “fall down seven times but get up eight.”
Current Energy: Queen of Swords. This is a card of accepting your power. Give yourself a little dose of confidence. It isn’t arrogant to do the things you are good at doing. If you don’t want to think of yourself as being good at something, then do the things you LOVE to do. Often they are the same thing.
Growing Energy: Strength. This card is just what it seems. Heal from what has happened, get up again, claim your strengths. Confidence and strength can grow as time goes on.
Middle Row – Orange Calcite
Calcite comes in a variety of colors, but the orange calcite here is especially associated with the second chakra, below the navel. Orange is the opposite of blue on the color wheel, so orange calcite can poetically speaking “chase away the blues.” Of all of orange calcite’s properties cleansing and uplifting step forward here.
Fading energy: Judgement. This also gives me the feeling that you center row folks had a heckuva year, but more on the mental and emotional level than in the physical / career realm. Let go of other people’s judgement of you and give yourself a second chance whether anyone else does or not. Humans are a diverse lot. There is someone, somewhere who accepts you just exactly as you are, no judgments or second chances required.
Current energy: Hermit. Nothing is better for letting go of old hurts than a little alone time. Give yourself the space to shut out all the judge-y voices. Set some boundaries, find your one guiding light. When you come out of your hermit cave, a fresh start will be right there waiting for you. Any day can be the first day of a new year.
Growing energy: Queen of Wands. This is a card of self care too, but it has an element of claiming your own time, skills, strengths and powers. The energy feel of this card is very much like the queen of swords and it feels like the queen of wands is standing in as surrogate simply because the queen of swords can’t be in two places at the same time. Putting it in those words, I get a sense that the year may be growing in activity. It could get busy. Whether that heaping plate of things to do is a good thing or a stressful thing is up to you.
Foundation Row – Red Carnelian
Red carnelian is a stone of courage, endurance and leadership. You never know what you have inside until it is put to the test. One way to discover your comfort zone is to step outside of it. But don’t worry, if you can’t step back in to the old zone, it will grow out to meet you. You got this.
Fading energy: The High Priestess. This is a card of mystique and mystery. When mystery fades it often leaves certainty in its wake. This card reminds me of a quote by scientist Richard Feynman “I would rather have questions that can’t be answered than answers that can’t be questioned.” Know with confidence, but question everything with equal energy.
Current energy: Five of Swords. Sword cards often denote action. Now that I think about it, the word aftermath is stepping forward here. The past three years have been pretty unhinged on the macro scale, if not on your individual one too. This card is validating what you feel, but also challenging you to rise to the circumstances. “Yeah, that sucked, but now what are you going to DO about it?” is the vibe.
Growing energy: The Empress. Get back to nature, baby. This is a big reminder to touch some grass this year, literally and figuratively. Somewhere I read about a study where people’s blood pressure came down a little bit whenever they looked at pictures of nature. That isn’t to say pictures of nature cure high blood pressure, but that objective, measurable change showed that we associate nature with relaxation and even that tiny bit of contact was enough to elicit a tiny bit of measurable, physiologic stress reduction.
Whether it is a new computer wallpaper, a walk in the park, a day at the beach or a week long camping trip…anything you can do to connect with nature is nothing but good this year. For goodness’ sake get outside and breathe some fresh air, will you?
And everybody wash your hands, wear a mask when you need to, get enough sleep and eat an occasional vegetable while you are at it.
I wish everyone a safe, happy, healthy and prosperous new year.
See you at the next sip!
Sage Sips is Tarot contemplation in the time it takes to sip your coffee.
Vacations have value, even if you don’t travel. The change of pace, the change is habits, the change in intent and energy is an important rest from the usual grind. But as it was, I got to visit the beautiful city of New Orleans for the first time and it is tied with Cocoa Beach and Mustang Island Beach as my favorite place south of the Mason Dixon line … because food and music. Lordy, the food. But that is another story for another time.
Like the Terminator, I am indeed back.

I’ve been thinking about it on my way down the hallway.
I really don’t have much else to say. Usually the post-companion videos don’t keep me talking this much. For once, I don’t have much to add. I’m sure I could have said much of this more artfully, but you already know I’m a better writer than a yootoober.
I’m a little stuck on that intuitive reference to that scene in the Indiana Jones Movie. Normally it is fun and cool when energy & intuition uses the common language of movies and music. Nerves are on edge, and the general energies locally (eastern United States) are still ringing in resonance with the insurgency at the Capital. That might just be me, not every sensitive or empath. I grew up near-ish to Washington D.C. The vast majority of our TV and radio was from there. We have good friends who live there. Thanks to AP civics in high school I’m the designated politics nerd at our house and still feel a little dialed into the place. The violent shoot-the-annoying-sword-guy scene is a giggle in context, and does demonstrate the calm of strength vs the vulnerability of showboating (come to think of it, maybe something Samurai would have been better, I dunno)…but with the funky mojo out there any hint of violence, even intuitive movie references, is setting of other red lights and sirens. This has roots in the day after the election somehow. Gaaackkkk…the energy that day was just so freaking toxic, and that’s when the maga(t)s thought they’s won. *shudder*
Stay strong. Stay safe. Protect your aura and energy.
And still wear your mask, keep your distance and wash your dang hands for like, the next year, even with the vaccine.
Here in the U.S., literally at the exact time as the election results were being announced in favor of President-elect Biden, Trump’s lawyers held an inept and thoroughly mocked press conference at “Four Seasons Total Landscaping” a lovely garden supply place nestled between an adult bookstore and a crematorium. Seriously. You can’t make this stuff up. Internet hilarity has, of course, ensued. As a result I can hardly look at the word “seasons” and keep a straight face. The “Seasons of the Year” layout name had to go. I offered to give a reading to the person who could come up with the best new name for it. Know how many people participated? None. Zero. Nobody.
*sips hot cup of schadenfreude*
I’m over it.
Not the laughing at the fall of the worst administration in U.S. history part. THAT is actually pretty entertaining. I’m over finding some cutesy-pants name for the layout. “Year Ahead” says what it is. Clear, straightforward, it works. I’m also over trying to “market” what I do here. I am a wise, skilled, experienced psychic. I’m here if you need me. I’ve done my part: Made my presence known, put things in order, and put a candle in the window metaphorically speaking. The sign on the cyber-door says open.
Beyond that, I can take a hint. None of the promotions have ever really connected with people. It feels like all the giveaways and special offers come from a place of fear and worry. I like to imagine I had a chat about the whole marketing thing with my fictional, snarky, dgaf alter-ego, Zombie Cat.
We’re both over it.
It’s just not the right vibe for this place. TaoCraft is about authenticity, simplicity, honesty, compassion – all the treasures that a Taoist influence has to offer. All of the layouts are now available all of the time, including Zombie Cat’s yes/no. The prices are as low as I can afford to make them – all of the time. It’s a fearless, solid, steady, and reliable energy. Really good Tarot needs that kind of environment.
Tarot is a respite in an emotional storm. Tarot is a light bulb over your head just when you thought you were all out of ideas. You can’t build those things out of solicitous, cutesy-pants, attention seeking energies.
If you want real, genuine, honest, skilled, experienced…and yes, affordable…Tarot guidance, I’m here for you. Normal pants and all.
Distance Tarot including the Year Ahead and Zombie Cat’s yes/no layout is available for order anytime, no appointment needed on the HOME PAGE
