When the pumpkin pie tastes just as it should

It takes a certain courage and generosity of spirit to be kind to yourself. It is OK to be grateful to yourself for that kindness.

What seems flawed on the surface can contain great beauty when we look at it as a whole. Scars are lovely souvenirs of the life you have survived. Removing yourself from unhealthy environments and toxic relationships can cause an ever changing mixed bag of emotions. It can make you exponentially grateful for the good ones. Yeah, this is a time for family…but hopefully it is family defined by love and relationship – shared DNA is optional. Personally, I think the whole Friendsgiving thing is kind of brilliant now that we are years into being a country divided by bigotry, racism, religion, politics and more. I don’t know that it is entirely a bad thing – many have learned the hard lessons that come with living fully, authentically, and protecting your peace.

Expectations are the enemy of a happy holiday. You don’t expect the pickles to taste like pumpkin pie. Smile when vinegar tastes sour because that just means it tastes just like it should. Life can be both bitter and sweet, but it always is as it is. The bitter times make it all the nicer when the pumpkin pie tastes as it should, too.

I’m thankful for all of you, and thankful to still be able to read Tarot for you.

Marriage Q&A: What love language do you speak?

Sage Sips is tarot inspired meditations in the time it takes to sip your coffee

Use the “Ask Me Anything” page to ask any questions on your mind. I’ll answer it here, with a post like this one. Names and everything will be changed to protect your privacy. Most of the time a Tarot card will be involved, but not always. My readings are a folk art form intended for meditation, contemplation and spiritual guidance, NOT to predict the future.

Q: What will be the primary love languages of my destined wife for me after marriage?

A: There are at least two important parts to your answer.

There is a deep spiritual law at play here: “Like attracts like.”

If you want to know what kind of love language your future wife (assuming you get married) you must first ask what love language will you speak to her?

True conversations, true communication, love languages and true love can only exist when it flows both ways.

Another way of thinking of this is embodied in the Six of Pentacles Tarot card which is sometimes read as “reciprocity” – you get what you give.

If you first speak the love language you want to hear, not only does use the spiritual law of “Like attracts like” in your favor, it helps you to find the right partner for you in a real-world way by helping you to find common interests and common bonds with a potential life-mate.

For example, if you love food and would like for good cooking to be your future wife’s love language, then cook for your potential mate or take her to nice restaurants as your love language to her.

An excellent way to find your wife’s love language – and a wife – is to speak your love language first.

Focus for Flow

What is it about money that ties people up in knots?

Hello and welcome to Sage’s Short Sip Tarot, a nano blog-cast and Tarot reading in the time it takes to sip from your coffee, or tea, or adult beverage or whatever it is you sip this time of day. I’m glad you are here!

Today’s card is the six of pentacles. Pentacles are associated with the physical realm, often with career or wealth. The six in particular is said to represent generosity, money flow, sharing, paying kindnesses forward, that sort of thing.

Many long years ago, way back in the before times, in the very early days of my professional reading career, I had one of the nicest experiences with getting paid for my Tarot skills and it didn’t involve actual money at all.

After the reading, and after my modest fee was paid (I’m still super affordable by the way) the client and I were chatting about Reiki and natural health services in our area, and business cards for her new side venture as a masseuse. I forget the exact context, but the thing that rocked my world was when we shook hands at the end she said something like “I have money luck, now I’m sharing some of it with you.”

That was the last time I talked with that charming, vivacious lady. I don’t know how her new business turned out, but I do know this. Here mindset in that moment was a treasure, and I was touched by her easy generosity in sharing it.

In these days of supply chain issues, inflation, dire news about government money management and the general cost of living, finances can be a fear inducing to mildly terrifying thing.

I can’t promise you crazy things like attracting or manifesting wealth, but I can share a few thoughts that might take the edge of a little bit of the worry.

First I’m reminded of the quote from Disney’s Mary Poppins that “enough is as good as a feast.” Defining your “enough” simply and within your means may not actually pay the bills, but it might help untwist the gut-knots a little bit.

Yeah, I know. It’s a very Tao Te Ching kind of idea. Just because I changed the name of the blog and podcast doesn’t mean the influence went away.

The other helpful thing is the client’s gift to me.

Try it once. Just stop for a second and think of yourself the way she thought of her joyful self. Think of yourself as someone who is fortunate and the things you need come to you almost without effort. Just for a minute allow yourself to have money-luck.

That isn’t going to make things magically happen. This isn’t about the law of attraction or some cultish prosperity gospel. You still have to work and plan and hustle just like before. But try it. Thinking of yourself as having money luck shaves a tiny bit off of the fear of not having enough. When you are just that tiny bit less stressed, you might think a little clearer. You might find a solution or an option that was missing before. When you think of yourself as having money luck it gives you a particle of optimism that all of your work, planning and effort will pay off in the end after all.

Knowing how you are going to go about getting what you need is money luck and riches indeed.

The Niggles: Means to an End.

“The Niggles” series of blog posts is about ideas that prickle the psyche. It’s that nagging dry hangnail feeling that intuition puts in the way whenever I haven’t understood a message or if I haven’t given a message that needs to be heard by someone.

Today, the niggly thing is gratitude.

I think it is a misunderstanding, really. Or maybe it’s the toxic-positive version of gratitude. There is a sense in some parts spiritual social media that gratitude is a pathway to achieving something that you want.

“Being grateful for what you have” as a means to an end perverts gratitude. It turns being thankful into something artificial even if the end goal is something very good like happiness, a healthy romance, a feeling of abundance or what have you.

I worry that some things I’ve said or written about so-called soulmates may have been misunderstood. When I said that the best way to attract the love of your life is to be happy with your life as it is right now, I never meant that you have to be grateful for being alone.

But when I said be happy, I meant precisely that. I meant to deliberately find the good stuff in the present moment rather than go through life laser focused on something you don’t have. Think about it. Who would you rather have as your soulmate, a person wrapped in the joy of living, or a person wrapped in worry about the future?

There is a difference between a social convention and a genuine emotion. Yes, by all means, say thank you and be polite even if you don’t feel all that. appreciative. If you spontaneously, naturally, authentically feel that way, then by all means live that. BE grateful with gusto.

Apart But Not Alone

We are all connected. Emerson tells us that the greatest gift one can give is a portion of ourselves. With that piece of generosity, through the interconnectedness of everything, if we give that piece of ourselves we discover the Cosmos – and it is us.

You Choose Interactive Tarot: Cautiously Prepared

Left: Nine of Wands. The feeling around this card is battle weary, battle hardened, keeping watch. Wands, as always, have to do with the inner realm, and the nine today has a feeling of baptism by fire. Fire, of course, is also appropriate for the suit of wands. We’ve survive so far, but there are battles to come. It is the darker side of keeping watch where where your own fatigue and pessimism is as much of an adversary as the threats you guard against. Rather than give up hope, use your experiences so far. You may be exhausted, but let that make you still, and listening. Settle into a still watching that lets your bones rest and your heart be still while you are cautiously prepared for what may come.

Center: Six of Pentacles. Coins once again bring us to the earth element and the physical realm. Energy has been dwelling with this, as it should. This is precisely where out attention should start. We have been called on to do practical things and this continues. There is a shift, a settling in. Now that we’ve had a couple of weeks of this, it is time to dig in for real, do what needs done for the long term, and that includes carving out spaces of generosity. It is time to see the new rhythms of supply and demand. Let go of what you don’t really need – it is ok to stop hoarding toilet paper and let the elderly in need have some. Act out of love and pragmatism in spite of the fear. There are real problems to deal with. Deal with them, yes, but do from a place of caring more than fear just as much as you can muster.

Right: Three of Wands. This is the lighter side of watching, the lighter side of being on guard. Keep an eye on the horizon. Conditions are right for a storm but one is not guaranteed. Watch, be on guard, but do so with confidence. You are battle hardened, just like the 9 of wands, but with greater resources. The danger here is overconfidence. Now is not a time for rose colored glasses any more than it is time for overly fearful ones. Temper your hard won preparedness with a tinge of caution and practicality. You are a hero…you can do this…but keep your wits about you and see reality as you do.
